Dedicated to the Turco-Mongol conqueror Tamerlane and his sons and grandsons, Gur Emir Mausoleum lies within the ancient city. Built in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the mausoleum features a mix of Persian and Mongolian styles, serving as a precursor for numerous Mughal tombs throughout central Asia--many of which were built by Tamerlane's descendants. Examine the elegant azure dome and elaborate entrance gate, decorated with various mosaics and carved bricks. Inside, observe the solemn monumentality adorned with geometrical ornaments on terracotta bricks and diverse muqarnas.   • Very beautiful mausoleum of Timur. Ornate mosaics on the outside. Not as grand as Registon but still a place of historical significance.
  • This a good place to start your exploration of the historic sites if Samarkand. It is not as big of a circus as the famous Registan, but the decoration is no less impressive. The tomb room is particularly noteworthy and awe-inspiring.
