Feel the grandeur of ancient Samarkand at Bibi-Khanym Mosque Bibi-Xonum, the remains of a gigantic mosque and a jewel of Tamerlane's empire, built after his Indian campaign in 1404. With the 40 m (313 ft) high sky-blue cupola over the main chamber and two smaller mosques in its spacious courtyard, this represented the largest mosque complex in the Islamic world at the time. Falling into disrepair after 1583, the mosque still displays its classic Persian-Islamic style with four ornate iwans and a pishtaq standing 38 m (125.5 ft) tall. The interior courtyard features a colossal stone Quran stand. A mausoleum to Tamerlane's favorite Chinese wife stands opposite to the mosque.
