Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, Willows

#178 of 482 in Wildlife in California
The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex (Complex) is located in the heart of the Sacramento Valley about 90 miles north of the city of Sacramento. The Complex consists of five national wildlife refuges (NWR) and three wildlife management areas (WMA) that comprise over 35,000 acres of wetlands and uplands. In addition, there are over 30,000 acres of conservation easements in the Complex. The Refuges and easements are part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service); they serve as resting and feeding areas for nearly half the migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway.

Hours vary for each refuge. The auto tours/trails on Sacramento NWR, Colusa NWR, and Llano Seco are 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset.

  • Lovely place to visit for the wildlife and as an escape from the noisy world around us. Bring your binoculars! Pack a lunch and enjoy a quiet picnic.  more »
  • Nice place to bike ride while watching the wildlife. Bring your camera, pack a lite lunch, bring your binoculars you never know what you will see. The Eagles are back which is always a rare treat...  more »
  • Was here in summer of 2004 and March 13, 2005. The tall lookout tower is neat. I think I posted my photo under Delevan National Wildlife Refuge by mistake.
  • This is my favorite refuge on the I-5 corridor. Close to the freeway, minimal day use fee, free with senior pass. Great gift shop. Fabulous birds this time of year, especially waterfowl (snow geese). There is a driving tour, allow at least 2 hours. Having a window mount for your spotting scope is nice, as you must stay in your vehicle until established viewing spots. Walking tour around one of the ponds close to visitor Center is also good to stretch your legs.
