A 38-room mansion nestled among pine and cedar trees, Vikingsholm was constructed mostly from materials found in the surrounding wilderness. It took 200 workers to complete this castle-like structure in 1928 and 1929. Considered as a supreme example of Scandinavian architecture, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours are available seasonally. Enjoy the scenery of Lake Tahoe as you climb a 1.6 km (1 mi) steep scenic trail to the site. Parking is limited and has a fee. Tours To Vikingsholm
This is a rather strenuous walk back up the hill but it is well worth it. Unique mansion on the water, woodworking is amazing, guessing they had an unlimited budget. more »
Walked down from the car park to the lake level to enjoy unparalleled views of the lake. The house is not open at this time of year but the exterior is still very interesting. Picture shows gasoline..... more »
The home is lovely. The history of it is very interesting. Lake Tahoe is stunning from any view. The tour guide was very informative. It is definitely worth the hike down to it. But remember what goes down has to get back up the hill. It may be too much for some.
Get there before 10:00 a.m. to make sure you get a parking spot unless you want to park along the road. It's a mile walk down and a pretty steep walk up but it's all on relatively even surface. They have a small gift shop at the bottom that has some ice cream and water. There are also restrooms but no water in the restrooms. The tour of Vikingsholm was 30 minutes long and a guide provided a brief history of the family and property. You could look into the rooms but only were able to enter one. Still, it was worth it to us and we enjoyed Inspiration Point, a hike up to Cascade Falls and a visit to Vikingsholm.
