Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco

4.1
#6 of 46 in Parks in San Francisco
Originally constructed in 1894 for the World's Fair, Japanese Tea Garden represents the oldest garden of its kind in the country--a mainstay of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Spread out over 2 hectares (5 acres), the garden features quaint bridges, traditional pagodas, stone pathways, koi ponds, and scores of plants and foliage native to Japan. You'll find that the garden lives up to its namesake as well: Stop for a cup of traditional Japanese brew at the on-site tea house. The gift shop offers different blends and tea sets, along with all of the accompanying ceramic wares. • At $9 per adult, based on its size and offerings, it would make much more sense at perhaps $4-$5. While interesting, it is quite small and underwhelming when compared to other tea gardens that I have ...  more »
  • If you are already in the Golden Gate park or near the science center, botanical garden, or modern art museum then the Japanese Garden is an easy stop. We went for a new experience. I had never been t...  more »
  • 9 dollars are far too excessive for this attraction very nice, fine, but not at all characteristic. To watch comfortably from outside through the wire mesh.

  • Such an amazing place to find peace in the middle of one of the biggest cities on the west coast. I could stay here all day taking pictures and come back every season for the different colors. It is best to come here during the week when the crowds are not so big but it is a great experience all year around.
  • Definitely this is very nice and beautiful garden but looks like the $8 ticket was a little bit expensive for me. Just 10 min was enough for walking around whole garden but small tea restaurant in the middle was a good place to stop by to enjoy a meal or tea and have a break. The best fun thing was to hear the bell ringing when you enter the gate on the right hand side. It will mean you 'Pay Here' for ticket. :)
  • Really beautiful and peaceful place. It was really easy to get away from the crowd and be alone. The only bad part is that it is a little small. But I definitely enjoyed the visit there.
  • Fantastic gardens, with a great historical back story. The gardens are quite serene. And your enjoyment can be enhanced if you take one of the free City Tour guide tours. They really know the place well, and you learn so much more about the nuances, that you might miss otherwise. The cafe serves awesome tea and snacks. Make sure you get some tea, and for sure try the green tea cheesecake
  • It’s a pretty place. Kinda small though. We just walked through it and took some photos. Prepare to spend about an hour there.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
