Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

4.6
#2 of 46 in Parks in San Francisco
Visit one of the country's largest and most-visited urban parks in the heart of the city at Golden Gate Park. The rectangular park is home to numerous museums, lakes, a botanical garden and conservatory, landscaped gardens, and athletic facilities. Spend a relaxing afternoon exploring the Japanese Tea Garden, or tour the previous home of the San Francisco 49ers football team, Kezar Stadium. Pack a picnic to enjoy lakeside or on one of the park's shaded lawns. Due to the park's sheer size, 412 hectares (1,017 acres), you might want to plan to take a bus or free shuttle back to the city center after exploring the park. • Huge variety of things to do, in a beautiful place. Free to expensive. Golden Gate Park is an amazing piece of land cutting right through San Francisco. It stretches from the shore where you can visit...  more »
  • We had a grand time relaxing at the park today. What a fun way to wind down at the end of our trip. Must visit again!  more »
  • How to throw away half a day. It seemed an attraction not to be missed. I have never seen a park in the middle of the lanes and passing cars ... really don't bother to see tufts of grass that are comfortably at home!

  • My favorite park, I've ever been too. Its so nice, to bring a picnic and relax. Great, for bike riding or jogging, walking. There's a lot of trees throughout the park. It smells so fresh and clean there. Great place, to sit and read a book or newspaper. Its so peaceful here, great for Children as well. It is a tourist attraction. There's a lot of people that visit. However the park is so huge, its not overly crowded. As a child, We'd always ride on the peddle boats. So many wonderful memories going here. I can't wait, to go back.
  • When you want to feel like getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city but don't have the time or the means to actually leave the city, this park offers a huge amount of space to feel reasonably alone in natural surroundings. It's great for wandering around, photography, biking, or making your way from the East end to the West and taking in Ocean Beach at the end as a day trip. I always feel like I get a bit of a holiday when I spend a day here.
  • So many hidden gems in the park. If you have some time, check out the Golden Gate Rod & Gun Club closer to the Sunset. You can practice fly fishing in large ponds that allow to work on your fly fishing game. Also make sure to check out the Japanese Tea Garden for an afternoon tea, and get tickets to the Botanical Garden in the summer when everything is in bloom. The park is incredibly dog friendly, and Hellman Hollow is a great place to let the pup off leash and through a ball (it isn't fenced in and this is where Outside Lands takes place every year but the space is large enough that your pup is safe from cars and traffic).
  • This park is such a gem. Many different areas to explore. Can't find myself living far away from it. Great for running or biking to get across the city without too much traffic interference. Check out the 9 hole golf course, the bison in the park, Stow Lake and Strawberry Hill, or either the botanical or Japanese gardens.
  • The park is really big and have some places that are quiet and peaceful! If you are a tourist go by bike, cause you can not visit all the park by walk, there are a lot of places to see! If you have more time you can go by walk and discover different areas little by little! Is amazing the park! Really beautiful to enjoy the day with your family ❤️

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
