Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

4.7
One of the most photographed structures in the world, Golden Gate Bridge is the first feature of San Francisco you'll see when driving in from the north. Opened in 1937, the structure boasted the longest suspension bridge main span until 1964. Still considered one of the world's greatest engineering feats, the bridge draws visitors with its numerous vantage points, from which you can see and photograph the picturesque bay and boats passing under the iconic structure's red towers. The bridge has sectioned-off pathways on each side for both pedestrians and cyclists, so you can take your time crossing and admiring the views. Though the bridge closes for pedestrians at night. • The Golden Gate is sensational even if just to observe, but super recommend cross her bike. It's not hard, is a line and you can do the famous beats and back if you think is a sendentário or if you want to risk can cross and go cycling to Sausalito, average degree of difficulty ... up push the bike and it's okay. On the way back you come by ferry:)

  • It's nice but not amazing. We hear a lot about, when you think about San Francisco, we think of this bridge, but ultimately it's quite disappointing. Do when it's sunny. Not to park nearby, the guards put tickets. Prefer public transport

  • Symbolic place in SF! I recommend you to rent a bike and ride to Vista Point (Sausalito). Please be aware that cycling through the Golden Gate in some hours is forbidden.  more »

  • You've seen in in photos, but you must experience all aspects of this modern day wonder. I've walked, biked and driven across the bridge and it does not disappoint. From the micro climates experienced while walking it and feeling the movement through the car tires - it is a surreal experience. I've been lucky enough to visit this beauty from the bottom looking up to the West entrance via the Coastal walkway. It is visually stimulating and pleasing as one looks at it from one of the sky high bar's in downtown SF. Do not miss it !
  • This is iconic, history, a must see on your stay in San Francisco. I’ve been around several times, but this was the first time visiting with a clear sky :) Enjoy the bridge the way you like most: walking, riding a bike, or just enjoy the view from a distance. TIP: should you stay multiple days in SF, ALWAYS change your plans if there’s a day with clear sky, and use this day to visit the Golden Gate Bridge. You might not be able to get a nice view of it on the other days!
  • We as a group had an awesome day. We found a great parking spot up on the hill. It overlooked the Golden Gate Bridge. We shot several photos from there. Then we went down around where the gift shops were. Walked out onto the Golden Gate Bridge. Got to see dolphins sea lions and other sea life from the bridge. What a great View From Alcatraz Island. A really great day.
  • Pretty cool spot for some pictures. Take a cruise on Adventure Cat for the full experience under and sunset. Maybe you will spot some whales as well. Its really quite amazing to see This International Orange just blaze through the thick fog. Come and discover this beautiful place.
  • Great views of the bay, the city, and of Alcatraz prison. If walking, the east side of the bridge is open to pedestrians and bicycles. If biking, both sides are open to bicycles. Both pedestrians and bicycles are protected from traffic. If driving, leaving the San Francisco area is free, but they do have a toll plaza when entering. They have a gift shop and a snake area. During high traffic area they open more lanes by using a zipper device that moves the barricade in the middle of the bridge over, effectively changing the number of lanes each side has.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
