Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, Sacramento

4.3
#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Sacramento
The site of the first European settlement in the region and resting place for many travelers who were headed west, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park recalls the pioneering spirit of the California Gold Rush's early years. Founded in 1839 by John Sutter, the fortified structure has since been restored and today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wander the grounds and view the adobe-style architecture of the central building (the only original surviving structure), which is surrounded by thick walls, defensive towers, and other buildings. Stop by the museum to view items owned by early pioneers who sought aid from the fort, including some from the infamous Donner Party. You can also join a guided tour to learn more about the history of the short-lived settlement, the region, and its residents. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Sacramento holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This is a really neat spot with a lot of history. I gave it five stars not for the quantity of stuff to see here but the quality. It’s a pretty quick little tour with some fascinating history. Best of all, they do a Halloween thing that is just creepy enough for kids without being too over the top.
  • This is an amazing step back in time for some hands on living history. They offer field trips and visits daily. There is also a very well organized overnight program they offer to schools. Volunteers run stations in the park while the students research and dress up as people who really did live in and visit the fort. It is an unforgettable experience.
