A gift of friendship from the people of France, Statue of Liberty National Monument long represented the first glimpse of the United States for thousands of immigrants arriving across the Atlantic Ocean from distant lands. The 93 m (305 ft) statue's large pedestal includes an interior exhibit explaining the significance of this icon of liberty and democracy. Designed by sculptor F.A. Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886, the statue represents the Roman goddess of freedom holding a torch and a tablet of laws. It's essential to book tickets in advance. "Pedestal" tickets give you access the inside of the pedestal, the museum, and the Fort Wood level. Reservations to visit the crown can fill up to six months in advance. Ferries depart from Battery Park, New York or Liberty State Park, New Jersey. Check the ferry schedules and leave plenty of time for the security screenings. Este passeio é feito de barco e é de graça. De longe podemos ver a Estatua da Liberdade e a vista da cidade de Nova York. O passeio de barco é bem agradável e dá para fazer umas fotos lindas. more »This tour is made by boat and is free. From afar we can see the Statue of Liberty and the view of new York city. The boat ride is very nice and can make some beautiful photos.
One word to describe? Breathtaking. Its on Liberty island next to Ellis island. Took the ferry and visited both islands in January. Awesome place to look at. The statue is huge and looms above you. If you have a clear day the scene is breathtaking. Since it was winter, we escaped the crowds but there are lots and lots of people. Heard in Summer its wall to wall people. The souvenir shop has so many nice stuff we couldn't resist buying lots for friends and family members. You could spend hours here. Minimum you need at least 2 hours in the island. The statue is spectacular at every angle let alone from the ferry. Very memorable visit.
Perhaps the highlight of any first visit to NYC. A trip that everyone should make. You won't be disappointed. It's not an expensive trip but do book as early as you can as you might be able to gain access to the pedestal, or even the crown if you wanted to. I was not able to get into the crown as the tickets are very limited. I think its not a huge space hence the low numbers. Liberty Island is a lovely setting. The boat trip is around 15 mins and the statue looms up as you approach. Make sure you take the right hand side if the boat for the best view but you can't miss her. The exhibitions are very informative and you get a real feeling of affection that the Americans have towards this landmark. It's a real beacon of hope and freedom. Allow at least 2 hours to see everything, and take a picnic. You could spend the whole day there just taking in the monument and the view back over to Manhattan. Worth every cent.
