Manoa Falls, Honolulu

4.5
#2 of 46 in Trails in Hawaii
Falling more than 46 m (150 ft), Manoa Falls sparkles against a sheer rock face. Take a 2.4 km (1.5 mi) hike through tall trees with twisted trunks and thick greenery to reach the falls. The pathway is often slippery, so wear shoes with a good grip. Then be prepared to take these shoes off to wade in the shallow pool at the base of the waterfall. Our Honolulu trip planning site makes visiting Manoa Falls and other Honolulu attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Be sure in the morning there be there otherwise totally overrun, don't forget mosquito spray and take plenty of water. The very well-developed Manoa if trail a through bamboo forests, over little bridges and stairs to a beautiful shaped gate out of trees. The forest is very beautiful and not in vain a filming location of many famous movies and series. The waterfall is not bad but we had presented us beautiful, totally of tourists crowded especially which do not follow the rules and go into the water basin or climb the Fellsen, thus it was to make impossible beautiful pictures of the waterfall. It took us 2 hours for ascent and descent including several photo stops.

  • Be ready to hike up a steep, and sometime slippery with mud, hike. Some high steps and lots of stone to grab on to all the way up. Wound up hoping to make it down again. Glad to have my husband the "m...  more »

  • A nice easy hike in the rainforest. Many famous scenes from Jurassic Park, Lost ND Avatar were inspired by scenes from this forest. Appropriate hiking shoes are a must for this hike. The trail can be slippery and quite uneven in some parts. There are bathrooms and a snack shop at the trail head, and a parking lot charging $5 a car. Avoid this hike if it has rained recently as the trail will be very slippery.
  • This hike is a very short and easy one. Even though it's a tourist hot spot you can find yourself being alone on the trail. There are also many off shots of the trail where you can be alone with nature if you desire. The falls itself isn't very large but the entire hike makes it worth while. Definitely a beautiful jungle hike!
  • The views here are amazing. It feels like you are in a different world. It definitely has a Jurassic Park vibe going for it. Bring some rain panchos and water proofing for things like cameras and cell phones because the rain can get intense at times. The hike itself is not too difficult but the humidity and the occasional rain can definitely ratchet up the difficulty for some people. The rocky parts of the hike can get quite slippery. There are some narrow parts of the climb leading to the falls that can get a bit congested with traffic going in both directions and with the rain coming down makes this the most difficult part of the hike. My younger kids did not have too much difficulty given the conditions mentioned above but I certainly had to supervise and provide the occasional helping hand more often. The views are worth it and would do this hike again. There were people on this hike with flip flops (definitely ill advised) and swim suits who were jumping and swimming into the waters around the waterfall. The signs there warned against this due to leptospirosis. Not worth risking in my opinion.
  • Really simple hike to the falls. Parking is $5 so I recommend walking from the residential area as it’s not too much further away. It rains every morning so be prepared with a raincoat!
  • Beautiful easy hike. Rocks are a little slippery and muddy so wear proper shoes! For younger couple can probably complete the hike up and down in about an hour! Definitely worth the hike!

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
