Picnic, walk, run, and have an active day at Kapiolani Regional Park, Hawaii's oldest and largest public park. Just beyond a residential neighborhood and near the beach, this 120 hectare (300 acre) park has large grassy areas, palm trees, and banyan trees. The park, listed on the state's Historic Register, houses an outdoor concert area for over 8,000 people and a zoo. On many weekends local artists showcase their crafts, which you can purchase. • From the morning run, I came to the Park. In Japan have seen big trees and took it easy on that front.

  • It is a park at one of the ends of Waikiki, near Diamond Head, for walking, running, rest a little bit of the beach.

  • Have been to Honolulu many times but had never been to Kapiolani Park. We ran the 2017 Honolulu Marathon and we ended up here at the finish. Wow. It was a large green space that included ponds, walkwa...  more »

  • Quiet park. Lots of picnic tables and open spaces. Beautiful banyan trees. Nice ponds and gardens with ducks and other birds. Bike paths all around.
  • Large grassy field- good for running, playing games, taking a dog, looking at pigeons or chickens, and drone flying. There is minimal tree cover- so also good for kit flying. I've never seen it crowded- so if you are planning an event, this might be your spot!
  • Minutes to everything essential. Proximity of the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Diamond Head Tennis Center, a short drive into the Diamond Head Crater for a great hike. Lots of eating places throughout Waikiki area. Challenge is always the parking. Wear sunscreen and a cap...it is HAWAII.
  • Crowded park with lovely beach. Home of "12 Coconuts" daily AA meeting under the palm trees. East end of Waikiki just footsteps away from Starbucks and shopping. Sprawl on the grass or on the sand. Just so crowded though; but a nice walk east takes one away from the congestion. Enjoy it for what it is ~ a lovely park in a world class setting.
  • A family-friendly park that has a large grassy area with shade and beach access. On a Sunday, there were lots of small family gatherings with self-owned BBQ sets and people playing ukuleles. Heads up that the surf break straight out has some giant rocks and coral below.

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
