Iolani Palace, Honolulu

4.4
#1 of 65 in Museums in Hawaii
The only royal palace in America, Iolani Palace saw the reign of Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawaii's last monarch, end with her overthrow in 1893. Soak up the building’s Hawaiian renaissance style, which seems fitting given that the site served as the seat of government for the independent Kingdom of Hawaii. Constructed in 1879, the building has a series of rooms restored to their formal royal glory, complete with period-accurate furnishings, fabrics, and decorations. You can explore the grounds on a docent-led tour or a self-guided audio tour, but be sure to book ahead of time to ensure a spot, as tickets can sell out. • Iolani Palace was pleasant surprise. I was pleased to learn more about the history of Hawaii and its last monarchs. We opted for the audio tour and cruised along just fine. The tour was informative it took us through different rooms inside the castle. Our 4 year old had to be strapped in a stroller and all of us had to wear shoe covers, provided by the palace management. Lots of historical artifacts in the basement. Parking is tough, just like anywhere else on the Island, but we were able to park underneath the state building across the street for a nominal charge. Keep quarters on you for parking.
  • The "Aloha" of this beautiful palace, seems to have been diluted. Perhaps through the years of public office. I much prefer conservation to restoration. And it seems the Hawaiian people were able to step up and stop somewhat the restoration of the throne's, and place a conversation on them. All said, definitely worth seeing.
  • I have been to Hawaii many times and never stop to visit. Anyone that visits a Oahu has to visit this place and see this beautiful palace as well as learn the history. Well worth the time and money. Unforgettable
  • We, people HAWAII, Hawaiian & non-Hawaiian, celebrated our last Queens 100 death anniversary at Iolani Palace. Iolani Palace is the only Palace in Untied States. Full of culture & history. A must see if you are ever in Honolulu, Hawaii. We Hawaiian are very proud & honored to be an Hawaiian as all other races. A must see. Just being on the Place grounds you feel/sense the presences of the love the Queen had for her poeple. Remember the Palace has electricity before the White House.
  • An amazingly beautiful and history saturated place. It (the grounds) is open to the public from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days a week. Tickets are also available for purchase if you wish to explore the interior of this incredible historic building

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
