Home to the largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts, Bishop Museum was founded in memory of the Charles Reed Bishop's wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last heir of the Kamehameha dynasty. Most of the original building was used as a school for indigenous boys. When the school moved, the museum expanded. In addition to the permanent collection, traveling exhibits move through the Castle Memorial building, and science exhibits are housed inside the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center. • Simply not only Hawaii, Pacific culture as a whole. From the life of the indigenous people of Hawaii until the Royal artifacts are on display, and the ones about the nature of Hawaii will also be on display. At certain times have them from the homepage experience program to check and it's a good idea to spend time visit the informative

  • We might have missed this museum if it hadn't been raining. Looking for a good place to spend a rainy day and found this gem. Multiple stories tall and every level filled with paneled walls and histor...  more »
  • This is a beautiful, educational and actual relaxing museum to spend hours in. The building itself is awe inspiring upon entry and the exhibits are excellent. It has a complete history of the Hawaiian...  more »

  • I take my son here all the time. It's an awesome place to spend the day exploring all the different exhibits and galleries. My son loves the interactive volcano that you can walk into! So cool! The reason for the four stars is the length of the featured exhibits are way too long. With a yearly membership, you only get to see maybe three exhibits. For over a hundred dollars a year for membership, I'd expect more new exhibits being offered.
  • Awesome! So many cool exhibits showing the Hawaiian traditional concepts, religions, and even how it led to today! I really recommend this place of you are interested in Hawaiian culture, volcanoes, and more. Just watch out... To walk from building to building, you do have to walk outside. If it is a rainy day, there goes the fun. Definately come early if you would like to catch some of their planetarium shows, as those sell out quickly.
  • If you're looking for Hawaiiana, this is the place for you. The main wing is a permanent exhibit of Hawaii history and artifacts. There are rotating displays to two other wings, so make sure you check the website to see the latest schedule of events. There is a nice planetarium and various shows that change seasonally. Another building is more science based exhibits. Try to see the lava demonstration.
  • Very educational. Well kept. Don't like that parking is not free. Great place to spend a day with the family.
  • Membership is worth it especially if you have children. New exhibits is always a nice treat throughout the year and we look forward to it. Members also experience first dibs to new exhibits. Thank you Bishop Museum!

Where to stay in Honolulu

Most of Honolulu's luxury hotels and oceanfront condos are located in Waikiki, the city's most popular neighborhood. Staying in this area keeps you within walking distance of one of the world's finest beaches, but it also means paying a bundle for your room and board. To avoid high rates and big crowds, consider the budget hotels outside Waikiki's busiest areas. Smaller hotels just a short drive from the city's beaches offer comfortable rooms and good food at a fraction of the price of their Waikiki equivalents.
