Referred to as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is the city's principal place of worship. Located on the Royal Mile, the cathedral is an iconic landmark in the Edinburgh skyline. Much of the current building was restored in the 19th century, but the four pillars in the center are thought to date back to 1124. Chapels, called aisles, were built around the pillars and extended out on all sides. This unique arrangement coupled with the vaulted ceilings and vibrant stained glass give the cathedral a timelessness. St Giles' Cathedral Reviews
This cathedral is huge and as medieval as you can hope for. It was used as Scotland's Parliament for a while. Towers over the upper Royal Mile which every tourist to Scotland has to traverse. more »
Le tout est de ne pas arriver pendant l'office, auquel cas, vous ne verrez pas grand chose. Dommage, car St Gilles est un petit joyau ! more »The whole point is not to arrive during the service, in which case you will not see much. Too bad, because St Gilles is a little gem!
Beautiful cathedral, Grand Gothic Medieval building with colourful stained glass windows and Presbyterian place of worship, where John Knox first and used to preach carrying the history of Scotland. I highly recommend everyone to visit this stunning breathtaking architecture as you walk down the Royal mile. We really enjoyed our day the weather was brilliant. We'll definitely come again May break awesome. Cafe downstairs reasonable prices with homemade dishes, a wide selection of hot, cold food and drinks. Very friendly, helpful staff and volunteers. Clean and tidy environment. There's a very informative board that highlights things to pay attention to and where they are within the cathedral. Entrance fee is voluntary suggested donations of five pounds per visit plus two pounds to all those who want to take pictures. They don't mind any amount though for the upkeep of the cathedral.
Surprisingly small inside (No crypt) but full of historical interest. The Thistle Chapel is especially beautiful. Anyone interested in Heraldry will be fascinated by the many flags on display
