Trip Planner: Europe / Turkey / Turkish Aegean Coast / Izmir Province / Selcuk / The Basilica of Saint John
A site of great religious and historical significance, The Basilica of Saint John draws visitors to the remains of its impressive architecture. The monumental cathedral was built by the Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century in place of an older church that covered the tomb of John the Apostle. While it stood, the basilica was one of the largest and most magnificent churches in Christendom and attracted pilgrims from around the globe. Even today you can get a sense of its grandeur just by looking at the remains of the impressive stonework. You can also visit the saint's burial place. Admission for the basilica includes a visit to the nearby castle, where you can see a replica of the structure and admire the panoramic view of the city. The Basilica of Saint John Reviews
Lovingly and carefully maintained by an order of Friars, the Basilica and Monastery of St. John was well worth the visit last summer on our second visit to the area. You don't have to be a religious..... more »
Large structure up on a hill, with great views out over the valley. A bit underwhelming after visiting Ephesus, but still interesting. Large castle further up the hill. more »
A huge area comprising the remains of the former Basilica of St John and the resting place of the apostle. There is so much of the basilica that has been preserved or put back together, that it is a pleasure to wander around the remains and see the model of what it was like in one piece. The bonus is the great panoramic view of the city beneath, as the basilica is located on top of a hill. Well priced entry, and well maintained site. Just watch out for the locals at the entrance trying to sell you 'ancient coins' they say they have found, who knows what they really are!
We came an hour before closing and were the only ones there which was great. Much of what is still standing has been reconstructed but it still gives a sense of what the church must have been like. Definitely worth spending an hour or so there. Tickets were 18TL for both the fort and the church.
