Efes Antik Kenti Tiyatrosu, Selcuk

4.8
#4 of 62 in Historic Sites in Izmir Province
Ruin · Tourist Spot
With the original seating capacity of 25,000, Efes Antik Kenti Tiyatrosu remains the largest structure of Ephesus and the first major landmark when entering from the lower gate. Constructed in the 3rd century BCE and restored under the Romans, this impressive amphitheater with flawless acoustics still hosts open-air concerts of contemporary artists, such as Sting and Elton John. With a little bit of imagination, you could picture St. Paul preaching Christianity to the Ephesians worshiping the Goddess Diana. The Arcadian Way is a great place to stop by and snap some photos of the amphitheater. To visit Efes Antik Kenti Tiyatrosu on your trip to Selcuk, use our Selcuk online trip maker.

  • It's important from the historical point of view but the site itself is nothing special. These are ruins you can see everywhere in Europe or the Balkans. Main sights are not original but rebuilt (restored) so they look like Disneyland. The entrance is way overpriced (13 Eur. basic ticket + 5 Eur. audio guide). The informational boards around the site are extremely poor and superficial and only in English and (strangely) German. Some places such as the library have only Turkish and German. Absolutely not recommended.
  • If you're in this part of Turkey I.e. near Izmir, Ephesus is a must see place. Stunning scenery and architecture with good descriptions of the various sights.
