Admire the architecture and history of Medina of Sousse, a World Heritage Site protected by striking, sturdy fortifications. Constructed during the Aghlabid period (800-900 CE), the medina displays many architectural and structural features characteristic of early Islamic town planning. Mosques, the kasbah and ribat, and a maze of narrow streets all hide behind the sheltering ramparts, built to protect the coastal town from pirates. A set of monuments showcase the evolution of Islamic art during its infancy, while a number of museums help to explain the history of the town and the changes seen in the medina over the centuries.
