Founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BCE, the city served as the capital of the Carthaginian Empire until its destruction by the Romans in 146 BCE. Many of the remains seen today date back to the Roman rule--the bathhouses and amphitheater remain particularly important examples of Roman building. An onsite museum helps to illuminate the complex and important history of the area, and highlight how various conquering nations influenced the city's cultural and artistic heritage.
