You can take a train from Fukuoka to Beppu in 2 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a train; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 13°C in December, and nighttime lows around 6°C. On the 9th (Sat), you're off to Oita.

Oita

Oita is just a stone's throw from Beppu. In December, daily temperatures in Oita can reach 13°C, while at night they dip to 6°C. On the 12th (Tue), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can drive to Sasebo.

With its U.S. Navy base, Sasebo has certainly developed pockets with an international feel: in downtown, often known as Sailor Town, you'll happen upon a number of eateries serving American-style hamburgers.
