Heart of the Italian Renaissance

With surrounding medieval walls and network of 15th- and 16th-century architecture, the city of Ferrara is often deemed the Heart of the Italian Renaissance.
Start off your visit on the 4th (Fri): step into the grandiose world of Castello Estense, steep yourself in history at Palazzo Schifanoia (Palazzo della Gioia), get to know the fascinating history of Piazza Trento e Trieste, pause for some serene contemplation at Ferrara Cathedral, then pause for some serene contemplation at Chiesa di San Stefano, and finally contemplate the long history of Palazzo delle Poste.

Bologna to Ferrara is an approximately 1-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or take a bus. In December, plan for daily highs up to 8°C, and evening lows to 0°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Fri) so you can drive to Venice.

Venice

Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Piazza San Marco and Basilica di San Marco. Get out of town with these interesting Venice side-trips: Padua (Scrovegni Chapel & Chiesa degli Eremitani) and Verona (Casa Del Clero, Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, &more). You can drive from Ferrara to Venice in 1.5 hours. Another option is to take a train. In December in Venice, expect temperatures between 11°C during the day and 1°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 8th (Tue) early enough to go by car to Pisa.

Known worldwide for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the city of Pisa historically served as a maritime power in the heart of Tuscany.
Visit Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Campanile di Giotto for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Pisa: Florence (Ponte Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo, &more). Getting from Venice to Pisa by car takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or fly. Traveling from Venice in December, you will find days in Pisa are somewhat warmer (15°C), and nights are about the same (4°C). Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 12th (Sat) to allow time for the train ride back home.
