City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Kick off your visit on the 30th (Sun): look for gifts at Marinoa City Fukuoka, take an in-depth tour of Fukuoka City Museum, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Hakozaki Shrine, then browse the different shops at Tenjin IMS, and finally browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center. Formed in 2005 after the merger of several smaller towns, Aso still offers a break from the urbane.
