Fukuoka

City of Yatai
The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River. You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Kushida Shrine and Tsutsukihama Beach. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Nijino Matsubara. Change things up with these side-trips from Fukuoka: Kitakyushu (Kokura Castle & Mojiko Retro), Miyajihama Beach (in Fukutsu) and Iki (Kuyoshihama Beach & Ohama Beach). There's still lots to do: browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, look for gifts at Kobo Tottan, take a stroll through Nishijin Shopping District, and enjoy breathtaking views from Fukuoka Tower.
