The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Nokonoshima Island as well as Canal City Hakata. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Dazaifu (Komyozen-ji Temple, Dazaifu Tenman-gu, &more). And it doesn't end there: go for a walk through Ohori Park, buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, and admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station.
