Step out of the city life by going to Krafla Lava Fields and Selfoss Waterfall. Moorudalur Farm and Sigurgeirs Bird Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Reykjahlid: Hafragilsfoss (in Vatnajokull National Park) and Vesturdalur (in Asbyrgi). There's still lots to do: take in the dramatic natural features at Askja, Head underground at Lofthellir Lava Cave, take in the dramatic scenery at Hverfjall, and take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Traveling by combination of flight and bus from Reykjavik to Reykjahlid takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In August, daytime highs in Reykjahlid are 16°C, while nighttime lows are 8°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Wed) so you can travel to Vik.

Getting from Reykjahlid to Vik by combination of taxi, flight, and bus takes about 8 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of bus and flight. Expect a daytime high around 14°C in August, and nighttime lows around 11°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 28th (Fri) so you can go by car to Grundarfjorour.
