Saga

Saga is the capital city of Saga Prefecture, located on the island of Kyushu, Japan.Saga was the capital of Saga Domain in the Edo period, and largest city of former Hizen Province.As of February 28, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 234,453 and a population density of 543 persons per km². Museum-lovers will appreciate Ishibashi Bunka Center and Ishibashi Cultural Center. Get some cultural insight at Chikuzenmachi Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum and Saga Shrine. Venture out of the city with trips to Catholic Imamura Church (in Tachiarai-machi), Dazaifu Tenman-gu (in Dazaifu) and Nyoirinji Temple (in Ogori). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Saga Castle Shachinomon & Tsuzuki Yagura, get engrossed in the history at Former Koga Bank, admire the striking features of Sagajo Park, and see the interesting displays at Saga Balloon Museum.

Stockholm, Sweden to Saga is an approximately 18-hour combination of flight and car. You'll lose 8 hours traveling from Stockholm to Saga due to the time zone difference. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Stockholm in June, with highs in Saga at 30°C and lows at 22°C. On the 8th (Tue), you're off to Shimabara.

Shimabara

Shimabara is a city located on the north-eastern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula, facing Ariake Bay in the east and Mount Unzen (including Fugendake) in the west, in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.As of October 1, 2016, the city has an estimated population of 44,936 and a population density of 540 persons per km². Your inner history buff will appreciate Shimabara Castle and Jishoro. Museum-lovers will get to explore Gamadasu Dome (Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall) and Tsunagi Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Shimabara side-trips: Shiroishi Station (in Ashikita-machi) and Minamishimabara (Hara Castle Ruin, Kuchinotsu Folk History Museum, &more). And it doesn't end there: appreciate the extensive heritage of Samurai Houses, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kotoji Temple, and learn more about the world around you at Heisei Shinzan Nature Center.

Getting from Saga to Shimabara by car takes about 2.5 hours. In June, plan for daily highs up to 30°C, and evening lows to 22°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 12th (Sat) so you can travel to Nakatsu.

Doctor Oe History Museum and Oita Prefectural Museum of History will appeal to museum buffs. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Usajingu Shrine and Okudaira Shrine.
