Saga is the capital city of Saga Prefecture, located on the island of Kyushu, Japan.Saga was the capital of Saga Domain in the Edo period, and largest city of former Hizen Province.As of February 28, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 234,453 and a population density of 543 persons per km². Ishibashi Bunka Center and Kora Taisha Shrine are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Chikuzenmachi Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum and Saga Shrine. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Saga: Nyoirinji Temple (in Ogori), Dazaifu Tenman-gu (in Dazaifu) and Catholic Imamura Church (in Tachiarai-machi). There's lots more to do: don't miss a visit to Saga Castle Shachinomon & Tsuzuki Yagura, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Matsubara Shrine, see the interesting displays at Chokokan, and steep yourself in history at House of Yamaguchi Family.

Shimabara

Shimabara is a city located on the north-eastern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula, facing Ariake Bay in the east and Mount Unzen (including Fugendake) in the west, in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.As of October 1, 2016, the city has an estimated population of 44,936 and a population density of 540 persons per km². You'll discover tucked-away gems like Shimabara Castle and Hara Castle Ruin. Visit Samurai Houses and Honkoji Temple for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Shimabara side-trips: Minamishimabara (Kuchinotsu Folk History Museum & Minamishimabara Dolphin Watching). There's much more to do: get impressive views of Gamadasu Dome (Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kotoji Temple, steep yourself in history at Jishoro, and get engrossed in the history at Tourist Restoration Memorial Museum.
