Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
On the 4th (Mon), contemplate the geological forces at Santa Maria Volcano, then take in the dramatic natural features at Fuentes Georginas, and then contemplate the waterfront views at Laguna Chicabal. On your second day here, take in the architecture and atmosphere at La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora), pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral del Espiritu Santo, then pause for some photo ops at Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango, and finally shake up your sightseeing with a climbing tour.
