Expect slightly colder weather when traveling from Tokyo in July: highs in Shimoda hover around 32°C, while lows dip to 28°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Mon) so you can take a train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Head to Dotombori District and Naniwa Meibutsu Ichibirian Dotomborifor some retail therapy. Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Sanjusangendo Temple for their historical value. Venture out of the city with trips to Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center & Nara Park). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, wander the streets of Gion, don't miss a visit to Nijo Castle, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji.

You can take a train from Shimoda to Kyoto in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or fly. Traveling from Shimoda in August, expect nights in Kyoto to be about the same, around 29°C, while days are somewhat warmer, around 39°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Thu) early enough to travel to Iwami-cho.
