The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Jishu Shrine in Otsu, approximately Otsu away. The adventure continues: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and wander the streets of Gion.

Zurich, Switzerland to Kyoto is an approximately 17- hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of train and flight. The time zone difference moving from Central European Standard Time to Japan Standard Time is 8 hours. Traveling from Zurich in October, things will get a bit warmer in Kyoto: highs are around 27°C and lows about 18°C.
