Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and Asakusa Shrine are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Museum-lovers will appreciate Pola Museum of Art and Fire Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Kamakura (Hokokuji Temple (Takedera Temple) & Kencho-ji Temple), Hakone Stone‐paved Road (in Hakone-machi) and Mitsumine Shrine (in Chichibu). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Nezu Shrine, admire the masterpieces at Tokyo National Museum The Heiseikan, visit Yanaka District, and get engrossed in the history at Kanda Myojin.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Heian Shrine and Ninna-ji Temple. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Go for a jaunt from Kyoto to Koka to see Miho Museum about 52 minutes away. There's still lots to do: take a stroll through Gion, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and don't miss a visit to Daigo-ji Temple.

To find ratings, photos, more things to do, and more tourist information, go to the Kyoto road trip site.

Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Nigatsu-do Temple and Horyu-ji Temple. Discover out-of-the-way places like Hase-dera Temple and Koyasan Danjo Garan. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Muroji Temple (in Uda), Koya-cho (Kongobu-ji Temple & Koyasan Reihokan Museum) and Kofuku-ji Temple (in Nara).
