The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Start off your visit on the 7th (Tue): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa, explore the historical opulence of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, and then gain insight at Plaza Santo Domingo. Keep things going the next day: don't miss a visit to Plaza Bolivar, get engrossed in the history at Museo del Oro Zenu, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, and finally admire the striking features of Las Bovedas.

Capital of the Inca Empire for three centuries, World Heritage-listed Cusco is now a major tourist destination, drawing nearly 2 million annual tourists with its well-preserved colonial architecture and proximity to Machu Picchu.
Step out of Cusco to go to Huaro and see Templo San Juan Bautista de Huaro, which is approximately 50 minutes away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Sacsayhuaman, admire the masterpieces at Museo de Arte Precolombino, explore the ancient world of Qorikancha, and get the lay of the land with Walking tours.

You can fly from Cartagena to Cusco in 9.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and flight; or drive. Traveling from Cartagena in April, expect Cusco to be cooler, temps between 68°F and 43°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Mon) early enough to travel to San Andres Island.
