Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Visit Piazza San Marco and Basilica of St. Anthony for their historical value. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Scrovegni Chapel and Parrocchia San Nicolo. Take a break from Venice with a short trip to Castello Estense in Ferrara, about 1h 25 min away. There's still lots to do: admire the landmark architecture of Doge's Palace, explore the activities along Canal Grande, explore the world behind art at Gallerie dell'Accademia, and wander the streets of Cannaregio.
