Millennium Elephant Foundation, Kegalle

3.1
#2 of 6 in Things to do in Kegalle
Take a walk with elephants at Millennium Elephant Foundation, a 6 hectare (15 acre) rescue and rehabilitation center dedicated to caring for these majestic creatures. Captive elephants in Sri Lanka are common--they're often not only used as a sign of wealth and as tourist attractions, but also as labor for the logging industry. This foundation raises awareness about elephant mistreatment and promotes the phasing out of elephant rides and the ban of Howdah elephant chairs. After a stroll with these mighty creatures, help an elephant relax in a refreshing river bath. Volunteers as well as tourists are welcome at the foundation. Put Millennium Elephant Foundation on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Kegalle trip planner.

  • Last summer I had the trip of a lifetime to volunteer at the Millennium Elephant Sanctuary. I travelled for the first time on my own and was greeted by Jade in Colombo with an extremely warm welcome. All the staff took me under their wing and I quickly settled into an experience which was life changing. The Elephants within the sanctuary and the dogs too are loved, cared for and cured. The love within the sanctuary is profound between the staff and the animals. I loved being immersed into a new culture and shown around various parts of Sri Lanka. The opportunity widened my knowledge and horizons and has encouraged me to peruse similar opportunities.
  • I stayed for 2 weeks at this beautiful place and felt like family from day 1. The work/leisure balance is just right and any form of help is must appreciated. You can clearly see where your assistance is going, with not only the elephants but the whole community benefiting from donations/volunteer work. Diets and skill level are catered to and you get awesome experiences to walk away with, highly recommend!
