Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy

#1 of 195 in Things to do in Kandy
A World Heritage Site, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic plays home to one of Buddhism's most important relics, the tooth of the Buddha himself. Originally constructed in 1595, the temple played a key role in the nation's history, as local tradition held that the right to rule to country lay with the one who possessed the Buddha relic. You can enter the main hall of the temple and admire its vaulted ceilings and columned hallways adorned with golden statues of elephants, likenesses of the Buddha, and scenes from his life. Though you can't actually see the tooth itself, you'll get a chance to observe the gold casket that encloses it. Afterwards, you can wander the rest of the temple complex and discover its array of shrines, halls, and displays. Plan my trip to Kandy with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • This visit will have a bit of a walk and climb to do. I do not recollect wheelchair access being available. The sacred tooth is placed inside a casket. Photography is permitted only of the casket...  more »
  • Kind of overpriced for what it is. Nothing is especially interesting here of all the sites we’ve seen. The Buddhism museum is interesting and informative. Also note that while it does not say so...  more »

  • Serene and despite the crowds, quiet and peaceful. Try and time it as the main temple was closed between 0945-1030 (at least on a Sunday). Expect huge crowds around this time but nothing you can't manage. Gorgeous inside. A good museum with a Famous elephant, Rajah, which has undergone taxidermy. Rare. A decent souvenir shop as well.
  • This being a sacred place, is of unique tranquility! You could cover up the whole place in less than 2 hours. Photographs arent allowed to be taken in certain parts of it and that has to be obeyed. Also, you should wear clothing that covers your body fully, preferably white. The part where it starts becoming a scam is where foreigners are charged! What!? Why would anyone charge foreigners to see an amazing temple!? Do temples have an entrance fee!? Get a life people! And the total fraud is with the tour guides! They don't tell you what to wear and what not to wear, so when you get there with shorts and sleeveless tops the security or whoever provides you with clothing that covers it up. But the catch is, you're being charged for it, and the tour guide gets a commission out of it. So just be mindful. Happy travelling!
