Explore at least a few of the 2,000 lavishly decorated rooms of the historic Royal Palace of Madrid, considered one of the finest buildings in the city. Take the grand stairway to discover the state rooms, noted for their detailed tapestries, frescoes, porcelain, carvings, china, and silverware. The courtyard connects to both the old pharmacy, which holds hundreds of bottles of centuries-old medicines, and the royal armory, a two-level exhibit of medieval weapons and armor. Although the enormous palace is the official residence of the King, the royal family doesn’t actually live here; the site is generally used for state ceremonies. Avoid visiting on Wednesdays, when entry is free and the lines are extremely long. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Madrid holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Royal Palace of Madrid and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Royal Palace of Madrid Reviews
The Palace is beautiful and quite large. Very impressive display of wealth and art. There are attendants constantly reminding you that you aren’t allowed to take photographs, which is a shame given... more »
It’s another European royal palace. Standard ceremonial soldiers (on horses). Nice to sit and enjoy lunch by. Nearby gardens are a good spot for a picnic more »
One of the best Palaces’ in Europe and perhaps the most underrated. The rooms are extremely well kept and dare I say ‘move in ready.’ I found the entire property to be more impressive than Windsor Castle or any of the Palaces In Vienna. The biggest downfall is you cannot take pictures inside the building. I highly recommend a visit.
A very beautiful building. We stopped here when we had a day layover coming back from Croatia. The artwork and design of the building from the inside and out was breathtaking. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you have the chance to spend some time in Madrid!
