To see one of the world's biggest collections of Russian art, head to State Tretyakov Gallery. Established in 1856, the museum began as a private collection of artworks acquired by merchant Pavel Tretyakov and housed inside a building designed by artist Viktor Vasnetsov. Today, this national repository of art contains over 170,000 pieces, including notable works by Repin, Kandinsky, and Malevich. The museum's vast collection also includes a series of 12th-century icons painted on wood by unknown artists. Pick up a floor plan at the entrance, and be sure to visit the halls housing sculptures by Shubin, Prokofiev, and Martos. • I wasn't well introduced to Russian artists really, so this is a wonderful surprise. Russian artists didn't only draw for formalities but a lot more that appeals to normal uneducated public. The amazing works on fairy tales, nationalism, nature, humor, etc was a great surprise. I loved it and would certainly go there again. Several times if I can. NOTE. Google Maps tells you it closes at 6pm. Right, but last ticket sold to enter is by 5pm then they block entry and wait till 6pm to have all audience inside to leave. I tried to do something about it, but Google Maps is just not geared to handle this.
  • A very interesting collection of art, in fact one of the largest (if not the largest) collections in all of Russia. While a lover of the arts will find him/herself intrigued by everything here, you REALLY have to like art to go here. To see everything it takes a good 3-4 hours if you take your time, so please be considerate of the members of your party (whether they be kids, colleagues, or spouses) who aren't as interested with paintings, sculptures, and the like and do not take them with you.
