#8 of 537 in Museums in Moscow
Moscow's largest museum of Western art, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts holds one of the most significant collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works in the world. Opened in 1912, this institution also displays Renaissance masterpieces, notably works by Botticelli, Tiepolo, Veronese, and Rembrandt. An exhibit dedicated to ancient civilizations, a major draw for history buffs, contains examples of Egyptian ritual items, sarcophagi, jewelry, and weapons. Pay special attention to the displays featuring 2000-year-old artifacts from the purported site of ancient Troy, excavated in the 1870s by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. Pick up an audio guide at the info desk in front of the museum shop. • First household details: Breakfast tightly. Museum cafe is small, cramped and wildly expensive; coffee and bun - 450 rubles, more expensive than in the Bolshoi! But at least the cards are accepted... The guards said that it is real to carry a bottle of water with you, because there is no inspection, but do not drink it in plain sight. The toilet is also not a palace, one for the whole building, but at least the queue goes quickly. In the wardrobe - ladies of a very venerable age and aristocratic look; In winter, go better in a light down jacket - the fur coats are heavy, and they are not from a good life, probably, there work. There are two gift shops on each floor. In fact...

  • I think that the exhibition "Shchukin. Biography of the Collection" became one of the most memorable events of 2019 in the cultural life of Russia. The collection of Sergei Shchukin and his brothers includes many masterpieces of European painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are works by Monet, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, Van Gogh. You have to see if you have the opportunity.

  • Great museum. I went in particular for a special exhibition that was going on. I found it amusing that rather than have the exhibition in it's own space they simply covered up the permanent collection works with black cloths and scooted the sculpture out of the way. It became a backdrop for the amazing collection on display. Overall the building is old and interesting. The gift shop is not really a shop. More of a concession stand type setup. I like a good museum shop where you can wander around looking at everything. This is very limited. As an American I was disappointed that they didn't have a copy of the exhibition catalog in English. HINT: Order your tickets online to avoid potentially long lines!! Then you can scoot right in the side door and off you go..
  • Amazing museum that holds, we saw the the exhibit of impressionist artists and it was looking into a book of art history. All the masters and some of their greatest works, ground floor of the museum especially the Egyptian room is worth seeing, many of the sculptures are plaster reproductions however. Opens at 11 recommend getting tickets ahead of time as the line in can be a tad long and e-tickets entitles you to skip it
