Garden Castle Must See
World Heritage Site Quinta da Regaleira boasts romantic architecture and a lush park. Walk through the park and past lakes, wells, fountains, and statues. The palace, which was completed in 1910 and nicknamed the Palace of Monteiro the millionaire for its former owner, is the work of Italian architect Luigi Manini using Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline influences. Notice the palace's gargoyles and octagonal tower, among other distinctive attributes, as well as its intricate, multi-level chapel. Take in views of the Castle of Moors and Pena Palace. • The most spectacular site of Sintra undoubtedly for me. I recommend visiting it or walk away from the town using the bus. We can deliver the car to there, and had it difficult to climb because the road is narrow and usually have enough traffic on average tomorrow.

  • We spent here a hot morning literally hiding from the sun under the trees and in the tunnels! Magnificent place to spend your day enjoying this masterpiece! I would recommend to reserve good 2-3 hours...  more »
  • Could not miss this magical garden without going through its amazing caves. A funny and unforgettable moment for all the family! To do!

  • Loved the place! This was my third visit and every time I discover more hidden places! I recommend to pay for the guided tour! Very very interesting! And the gardens are so pretty and wild.. I really recommend to visit this place that is pretty reachable even if you don't have a car and don't want to pay for the bus! Is 30 minutes of relaxed walk from the train station (direct trains from Lisbon!)
  • A magical place, almost fairy-tale like. Can easily spend a full day here with friends of family, exploring every nook and cranny. So many hidden stairs, passages, even a secret entrance in a cave leading to a very special fountain. Only 6€ for self guided tour. Not to miss in a sunny day.
  • If you're into eclectic spots with a subterranean maze-like cavern system and you have a few hours to spare - this is a great spot. Fun to try to decipher all the artwork and stone crafts spread around the place. Keep an eye out for "foreign" gods and objects. :) Oh, that subterranean tower truly is as amazing as it looks in the pictures.
  • The best place I visited in the area. You can spend the whole day there easily. So many things to see and do. Everything is beautiful and well taken care. Worth the visit.
  • The only thing I can say is WOW! It is a very impressive castle and by itself is wonderful. The gardens and all the caves you can walk and explore, you feel like in a movie, when you start going down and into secret passages. Do go with time, since you can be there walking on the gardens for 3 hours and after you can see the main house that is also very nice and well kept.

Where to stay in Sintra

For quick and easy access to Sintra's array of authentic buildings and historical sites, stay in the town's World Heritage-listed center perched atop a hill. By staying in the midst of the action, you'll be within walking distance of most of the town's main sights and you'll avoid the challenging parking situation that day-trippers and those staying further outside of the city face. For a real authentic experience, check into one of the many small boutique hotels, guesthouses, or hostels tucked in among the city's winding streets and 19th-century architecture, many of which sit high on the rugged slope near the national palace in mainly residential areas.
