  • Museum a bit but which is worth a visit if you're interested in azulejos. A lot of parts. A chapel to take your breath away. At the end, small shaded very pleasant courtyard.

  • One of the most beautiful museums of the city where the treasures of this strictly Portuguese art are the "azulejos" tiles are presented. Beauty and variety of colours, drawings, assemblies. We can go back often without ever tiring. A must.

  • If you've spent any time in Lisbon you can't help but notice ceramic tiles. They are everywhere. After seeing so many my friend and I trekked out to the National Tile Museum to learn a little more about them. Apart from the expected history of tile making there are many impressive examples walls covered in murals made from tiles. My favourite was a massive and detailed panoramic mural of Lisbon from a just before the 1755 earthquake. There is also a wonderfully ornate church as part of the museum. If you need to relax while there the cafe is very peaceful - lots of shade, trees, waterfalls.
  • A bit of a walk but so cool! You'd think a tile museum would be super lame but it was great. Loads of cool art in a beautiful building.
  • I would rate this the best museum in Lisbon: it gives you an inside into one of the greatest Portuguese cultural elements and walks you through hundreds of years of history. Thoroughly enjoyable, colorful and fun.
  • Great place, you can learn some history here and see Lisbon looked like before the big earthquake. You can see how the tiles are made and some very amazing patterns.
  • Did not expect this to be very interesting, but boooy was I wrong! The museum is housed in a former convent, in itself worthy to admire. Besides the museum items there are the monastery decorations and treasures to behold at. Also an experience is dining in the beautiful restaurant in the monastery courtyard. It was a nice little trip outside the usual tourist objectives, and it gave some context to the everpresent tiles found everywhere in the city. Definetly worth a visit.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
