Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon

4.4
#6 of 79 in Museums in Lisbon
The vast collection of art housed at Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga includes paintings, sculptures, textiles, furniture, drawings, and other decorative arts created between the 15th and 19th centuries. Housed inside a lemon-colored palace from the 17th century, the museum remains one of city's major draws, presenting the evolution of European and Asian art through the ages. Pay special attention to the large panels depicting members of medieval Portuguese society paying respects to St. Vincent, the patron saint of Lisbon. This work, attributed to artist Nuno Goncalves, represents one of the first collective portraits in European art. Other museum highlights include masterpieces by Durer, Bosch, Cranach, Raphael, Tintoretto, and Velazquez. • Is a museum with a collection of spectacular, a fantastic palace with a beautiful view over the Tagus River. Since Portuguese and European Renaissance painting, to sacred art of historical and religious importance, first going through pieces of furniture that tell stories. In Lisbon, is a place not to be missed!

  • Situated in a great building, this well run museum is well worth a visit. However, if paintings of Christ, The Virgin Mary and other similar Christian Art is not your "thing", then this place is best ...  more »

  • Not complete what I expected, but lots of good things to see. I expected "ancient" meaning early and pre-historical items, but this was a number of European artifacts from roughly the 1500s and on. My misunderstanding as to what the museum would contain doesn't change that it was great to visit. I just want others to be aware.
  • Very interesting museum, with an excellent collection on decorative arts. Great japanese and indo-portuguese pieces.
  • Just relaxing. Reading all the tags. Bored shopping
  • With a superb collection of middle ages paintings and some outstanding early Japanese screens
  • The museum is large and has nice paintings and sculptures, but mostly religious pieces. Don't let the name fool you though, the oldest piece was from the 12th century, while most are 17th - 18th (80% of the pieces) and even 19th century. The 3rd star is for the nice garden and terrace.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
