#1 of 528 in Museums in Portugal
Marvel at the extraordinary range of artworks on display at Museu Calouste Gulbenkian. Formed from the private collection of Ottoman-born oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian (of which only about one-sixth remains on permanent exhibition), the museum houses treasures spanning East and West and including Egyptian relics, Chinese porcelain, Western masterpieces, and everything in between. After browsing the galleries of paintings, jewelry, furniture, sculptures, and more, take a stroll in the landscaped park in which the museum resides. • If you have 2-3hours in Lisbon and want to take in a museum/gallery that offers a bit of everything from some of the great European artists (Rodin, Monet) to great works from Asia (Ming dynasty), tile...  more »
  • During our vacation in Portugal visited a very interesting Museum. About him almost nothing in guidebooks, it does not offer tour guides. But in vain. The Museum is very decent. Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation except that he was a businessman, was also a collector. His collection he conveyed Portugal. Despite the fact that this collection is eclectic enough, there are so many remarkable works. Most liked the painting. Rembrandt, Rubens, Degas, Monet, Manet. A Hall with the works of Francesco Guardi on Venice. Very good work of Turner. All we recommend you to visit the Museum during your stay in Lisbon.

  • Beautiful Museum surrounded by a pretty garden which presents permanent collections and rotating exhibitions. It also gives concerts.

  • I spent about 3 hours there and took everything in slowly. Overall a really great experience which also felt like a short history of Portugal in art. I also saw the founder's collection which was pretty awesome. Plus there's a beautiful garden and wifi:)
  • Magnificent art and excellent architecture from 1969, still with all the original fittings and furniture. Tasty lunch... A time pocket from another era...
  • The Founders Collection is phenomenal but I wish we hadn't bothered with the modern collection even though it is well displayed. The woman on the ticket desk at the modern collection was very unhelpful.
  • Very nice collection of Greek, Asian, European pieces(furniture, tiles, paintings). The modern art museum is presented in an interesting manner. It also includes contemporary art. I don't like/understand contemporary art but I liked some of the pieces here.
  • Great museum with fantastic Islamic and Egyptian artifacts. Needs to be signposted a bit better from the Metro as to how you get to it.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
