Explore the historical Lisbon Zoo with its 300 species of animals, many of which are endangered. Dr. Van Der Leen, who owned the largest aviary in the country, founded the zoo in 1884 with the support of a few others. This zoo is focused on conservation and the continuation of endangered species. Learn about its efforts by participating in an educational program or joining in a recreational activity on site. You can see more than 2,000 animals, including 157 species of birds. The zoo also offers a number of entertaining exhibits, including a dolphin show. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Lisbon holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Lisbon Zoo and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • It's expensive - 85 Euros for two adults and five children - no family ticket, no late entrance offer if you go at the end of the day. We arrived at 15h30 (it closes at 18h00) expecting to see 3 shows...  more »
  • The Zoo is good, price is about true 25 euro, TSD is good but closes around 6 pm. On the territory there are cells with birds and parrots, prior to entrance for tickets)

  • This zoo is quite small and the lay out is on a steep hillside. It is not suitable for young children, the elderly or disabled. There is a small overhead cable car which allows you to look down on the...  more »

  • Great place to spend a day in a friendly environment, good for all ages, there are a couple of restaurants and a pretty crowded McDonald's. Apart from the variety of animals, we also saw the Dolphin show which was spectacular. Highly recommend, a 20 Euro well spent and an unforgettable experience!
  • On last July, my dad and I visited this zoo in Portugal and we saw lots of animals including bears, apes, birds, koalas, turtles, dolphins and all kinds of birds and they are amazing. I saw two cranes and their young as well. Either one of them confronted me and it was trying to peck me when I was going near the young but luckily I didn't get attacked by one of the cranes. The cranes thought I was a poacher but I did not want to hurt their young. These big birds sure are protective and they always protect their young from poachers and predators. The weather was lovely and very warm. Anyway, we are the tourists from Dublin, Ireland.
  • An excellent zoo. Really enjoyed the cable car ride. Great variety of animals to see close-up.
  • Old style zoo. Some of The animals don't seem to be happy at all. Maybe a reformulation like National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra could boost this somewhat sad place. More interaction and more freedom is a must.
  • We visited this zoo late on a Tuesday in mid-November which means we basically had the whole zoo to ourselves. I was amazed at the number and range of animals given the relatively small size of the zoo. I would recommend the entity that manages the zoo to focus on ensuring the zoo is kept cleaner which is why my rating is 4 out of 5. The zoo should also offer healthier food alternatives as the only option is junk food. The Lisbon Zoo has the potential of being an extraordinary place to visit if it is cleaned and maintained properly, offers heathly food options and expands to allow the animals to have more room to roam around. Finally, I had a pleasant highlight when visiting the bamboo monkeys as one of the baby monkeys squeazed herself out of the cage and then squeazed herself back in - I actually thought she was going to jump on my shoulder!
