Jeronimos Monastery, Lisbon

4.6
Inspired by Vasco da Gama, Jeronimos Monastery serves as a great example of Late Gothic Manueline architecture. You can tour the church, where several important events have occurred since the Middle Ages. Limestone sculptures inside the church pay homage to historical naval expeditions. Its impressive, ornate architectural style is partly why this World Heritage Site has become famous. The monastery was founded in 1495, though its structure was not completed for more than a century, in 1601. Vasco da Gama is buried here, along with other notable explorers. You can also visit the site's Maritime Museum and National Archeology Museum, as well as the nearby Tower of Belém. • Went here around 11-12 and the queue line was very long. Somebody advised us to go buy the tickets from the museum instead and indeed it was much faster. The monastery is a very beautiful place with intricate details. It's a pretty nice place to simply walk around and reflect. Although, it would be nicer to do this if there were less people.
  • Amazing place. Loved visiting every part of it. Close to few other major sightseeing attractions by the sea, it is a nice to finish with as when you are done you can have some sweets close to the tram in that famous place and then take the old tram which will take you directly to the old city. Lovely ride from the side of the monastery. The monasteries is rich in architecture and history. You might need at least an hour to go through it all. I advice you to buy the monuments pass this way you can pass the lines or buy your tickets online.
  • A very beautiful building. Absolutely astonishing from the outside. The whole stone carving and the level of detail, crossed with the age of when it was done it's mind blowing, but the admission, and the mess of the ticketing system and the constant abuse of gypsies and thieves swarming around the crowd made it a bit less appealing. It was a long queue, over 1h 30 min to wait just to get there and then to visit was under 10 minutes worth of things. The Lisbon card helped making the cost free. But still there was no way to skip the line and the cashier is only a 2 man office making it extra slow. Overall, if you have patience...the inside is breath taking. I loved looking at the details and the space. Looks like a level from Assasing Creed.
  • Top attraction in Lisbon. Always long ticket lines. Try to get your ticket online. I couldn't connect with the official website so missed the interior visit. The outside is beautiful and also the free access church right next to the ticket office. So don't be mislead by the long lines. Go to the entrance and you'll find, on the right, the free church access. Skip the sacristy. Charging € 1.50 to visit one room. Not worth it.
  • Gorgeous place! Definitely on my Europe's top 10. The venue is cozy, antique, lots of history. A must must in Lisbon either for locals and tourists. Beautiful decoration, garden. Expect a long line but worth it. The entrance is 10€ and you can get it right there.
