Jeronimos Monastery, Lisbon

4.5
Inspired by Vasco da Gama, Jeronimos Monastery serves as a great example of Late Gothic Manueline architecture. You can tour the church, where several important events have occurred since the Middle Ages. Limestone sculptures inside the church pay homage to historical naval expeditions. Its impressive, ornate architectural style is partly why this World Heritage Site has become famous. The monastery was founded in 1495, though its structure was not completed for more than a century, in 1601. Vasco da Gama is buried here, along with other notable explorers. You can also visit the site's Maritime Museum and National Archeology Museum, as well as the nearby Tower of Belém. • The area is must-see. It is part of the history of Portugal and very beautiful both as the Cathedral monastery, is economic. Maybe remove the input early in the morning and visit him at lunchtime, while you can walk to visit other nearby monuments.

  • Stunning architecture that is definitely something to see, but here's a few things: 1: as mentioned by others, the line ups are long. We were told to go early before opening. Best idea ever. We got th...  more »

  • Usually I go every year. It's a really nice place to visit with your family, friends or girlfriend. I'm definitely going again this Christmas (holidays) . Keep in mind that it doesn't need to be summer! You can always visit this wonderful place!
  • This monastery is just fantastic, wonderful. You will not be able to decide which side to admire while inside of it. It is definitely marvelous and obviously a must-see place while you are visiting Lisbon. Just take a bus, a taxi or a bicycle from the “Praça do Comércio” and go there. Surely something you will like to visit.
  • The monastery itself is stunning. No doubt about it. The two stars are for that. The loss is on the part of the staff. Not sure if they misunderstood me but their English seemed fine. I asked for 12€ ticket to enter both the ancient artifacts museum and the cloister. Handed the lady the cash but she only took the 10€ bill. I said I wanted both but they wouldn't listen. Other staff member he said "no you said only for the cloister". Just walked away and shook my head. Put a dent in the experience for sure
  • 10 euro is definitely too much. The exposition is very poor, and not everything is translate in English. The place is pretty awesome but management very poor.
  • It is a nice and comfortable tourist spot, and it is also classified as one of the World Heritage Site. The carving of the building is delicate and the garden inside makes the environment peaceful. If you walk for a while and want to take a rest, the long benches made by stone which are located inside the building is a good choice.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
