Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon

4.5
#3 of 575 in Museums in Portugal
See ruins of Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon's only church built almost entirely in Gothic style, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Today the site serves as an archaeological museum. Completed in 1423, the church was said to be the most lavish and imposing in the city at the time. Today you can tour the interior to see its remains and visit exhibits of various artifacts, architectural adornments, and noteworthy excavated items. View tombs of notable persons, such as King Ferdinand I, and see statues, Spanish-Moorish tiles, findings from the Roman and Visigoth periods, and relics dating back to 3500 BCE. • One of the most beautiful places of Lisbona.una what not to miss ... striking and very particular ... a roofless Church ... which highlights all architectures at the same time, we see the beautiful sky.

  • It is a church destroyed during an earthquake and not rebuilt. Surreal atmosphere, definitely I recommend visiting, an open air Church with a small museum that costs honest!

  • Very particular. The visit is brief, but well worth it. An archaeological museum completely uncovered because of the earthquake and that deserves to be seen in relation to the low cost of the ticket

  • Great place with lovely ruins and some stunning mummies. Very very pretty and hideously romantic. One of those places that fires the imagination to wonder how stunning the place would have been in its day. Will go back a second time when next in lisbon.
  • Honestly, this is all about being able to see and take pictures of the inside of the ruined church - the little museum is really underwhelming. (Though it does have two human, non-Egyptian mummies, if that's what you're into.) I really liked the atmosphere and the chance to take pictures, so it was worth it to me, but don't go into it thinking that there's more to it. What you see is what you get.
  • There is a show in the evenings- " under the stars" that combines music composed by local artists and the history of Lisbon. It's a quick and entertaining way of learning about the city.
  • A small general archeology museum with an interesting eclectic collection of curious items including Peruvian mummies of sacrifice children and a wooden Egyptian sarcophagus as well as local findings. To me the biggest attraction is where it is all situated: the ruins of the Cargo church and monastery dating back to the 14th century. Very picturesque and the only historical building in Lisbon that was not reconstructed after the earth quake of the 18th century.
  • Beautiful place right in the heart of the city. It's a quite the typical museum to visit so no huge surprise there, but I was lucky enough to go there during the time where Lisbon Unders Stars (an immersive show) was on and I can definitely recommend buying a ticket for this one. It will go on until 30th June 2018 and you will get to see the story of Lisbon and of the Carmo projected with lights installations right on the ruins of the Carmo. Absolutely magical.
