Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon

4.5
#3 of 529 in Museums in Portugal
See ruins of Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon's only church built almost entirely in Gothic style, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Today the site serves as an archaeological museum. Completed in 1423, the church was said to be the most lavish and imposing in the city at the time. Today you can tour the interior to see its remains and visit exhibits of various artifacts, architectural adornments, and noteworthy excavated items. View tombs of notable persons, such as King Ferdinand I, and see statues, Spanish-Moorish tiles, findings from the Roman and Visigoth periods, and relics dating back to 3500 BCE. • One of the most beautiful places of Lisbona.una what not to miss ... striking and very particular ... a roofless Church ... which highlights all architectures at the same time, we see the beautiful sky.

  • It is a church destroyed during an earthquake and not rebuilt. Surreal atmosphere, definitely I recommend visiting, an open air Church with a small museum that costs honest!

  • Very particular. The visit is brief, but well worth it. An archaeological museum completely uncovered because of the earthquake and that deserves to be seen in relation to the low cost of the ticket

  • Really nice place! Lots of history. Small but worth the 4 EUR entrance fee.
  • fabulous museum for authenticity and curiosity, neolithic to 17th century with the earthquake damage visible
  • Not an interesting museum if you're an enthusiast. Very modest collections from various ages and geographies. Still, - for 4 Euros - you can spend an half hour if you have nothing better to do.
  • Carmo is absolutely breathtaking. It a must visit. It's so old and beautiful and full of history.
  • The only thing that could try improving is the explanation of some of the pieces there. A lot of them have no correlation with each other so you may get a feel that the pieces in there are random pieces found acorss the country
