Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon

4.5
#3 of 528 in Museums in Portugal
See ruins of Carmo Archaeological Museum, Lisbon's only church built almost entirely in Gothic style, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Today the site serves as an archaeological museum. Completed in 1423, the church was said to be the most lavish and imposing in the city at the time. Today you can tour the interior to see its remains and visit exhibits of various artifacts, architectural adornments, and noteworthy excavated items. View tombs of notable persons, such as King Ferdinand I, and see statues, Spanish-Moorish tiles, findings from the Roman and Visigoth periods, and relics dating back to 3500 BCE. • I love, love, love this beautiful museum! We happened upon it our first day in Lisbon, and it is absolutely breathtaking. The church was mostly destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, and this is what re...  more »
  • The Carmo archaeological museum is located in Bairro Alto. Although very interesting architecture, not me the curiosity to meet your interior. The ticket costs 5 euros, which seems to be the default value of the tickets in the city. We walk around and we liked what we saw. Is a good place for sightseeing, rest on the square in front and drinking a good wine, Sagres or accompanied by a good cod in several local restaurants.

  • Incredible ruins and museum. An unexpected surprise in historic Lisbon. Highly recommended.
  • Nice staff indeed and impressive open building. Please note you're not allowed to eat inside. They also have a little cat living there.
  • A very remarkable place that really makes you wonder. Most of he chuch was destroyed in the big earthquke in 1755 and instead of demolishing or rebuilding it, the remains has been kept as a memorial
  • The architecture is awesome. There you have a window inside with a nice view of the city
  • Very beautiful, and not expensive at all. Best thing to visit when in lisbon!

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
