Belém Tower, Lisbon

4.1
A World Heritage Site, Belém Tower played an important role in Portuguese exploration during the Age of Discoveries. View the native beige-white limestone used in this Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style. King John II commissioned a defense system to be built at the end of the 15th century. The tower was not built until later, under King Manuel I, and was finally completed in 1519. Though the tower has seen many changes and additions to its original structure, it is still most famous for its beautiful 15th century architecture. As you explore, you'll discover the historical value of this site, which served as a defense at the mouth of the Tagus river and as a prison to many over several centuries. With our custom trip planner, Lisbon attractions like Belém Tower can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • A good tip, the 15 electric, is always full and it takes a while to get faster, the practical solution is to take the train at Cais do Sodré, directed Belém, fast and drop point is in front of the Torre de Belém.

  • Very good tour, were delighted with it and above all with the Guide! He helped us to resolve doubts about our trip (although they were unrelated to travel). At the end, it was nice to teach us sites to try the local cuisine! Highly recommended!

  • One of the nicest things about Lisbon and Portugal! Jeronimos is wonderful and also the Belem Tower is impressive. A must stop for snack/breakfast at the bakery (former) who invented the Pasteis de Belem.

  • If you’re in Belém then you need to come here. Be sure to buy your ticket before hand as the line can get long. To buy your ticket before hand go to Jerónimos Monastery. Be sure to go to the front doors. There is never a lineup there. With ticket in hand walk to the tower and bypass the line. Enjoy!
  • Beautiful tower to behold in sunny weather. It is extremely windy due to the close diasance to the sea. A good thing to know is that the stairways to the upper floors are very narrow and long. It takes quite some time to get through it all because of all visitors, but it's worth while for those who are interested.
  • Iconic, beautiful and easy to get to. Sunsets are beautiful here and there are plenty of great places nearby to enjoy wine or the views. You can't miss this place when cruising around Lisbon. A beautiful example of nature and history colliding!!!
  • Really a wonderful place, a must see if you are in the area!! Buy the Lisboa Card for free entry and to skip the line!! Best 40€ spent.
  • A Unesco world heritage site. Such a wonderful architecture. Looks amazing at night specially on a full moon

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
