Basilica da Estrela, Lisbon

4.3
Admire the fusion of Neoclassical and Baroque styles at Basilica da Estrela, one of the capital city's most recognizable churches and symbols. Finished in 1790 on the orders of Queen Maria, the church features an intricate facade with statues, carvings, and two tall bell towers. Explore the richly decorated interior, noting the different colors of marble used in the architecture. You'll find the tomb of Queen Maria laid out in the right-hand hallway. Be sure to continue past the tomb to get a glimpse of the extensive nativity scene, consisting of more than 500 individual terra cotta pieces. Make your way to the top of the basilica dome for a view over the capital. Plan to see Basilica da Estrela and other attractions that appeal to you using our Lisbon trip planner .

  • I've been in the Basilica for a quick visit and didn't get a chance to stay long, but I can assure you that the floor of the entry is beautiful and the energy of the Basilica is wonderful!!!

  • This magnificent Church, decorated rich located some away from the city center, and because of that you can see it almost without any annoying tourist crowds. Take time to consider the building of angles and aspects, so that only look like this gives you a clear understanding of the idea of the Guide. Don't forget to enter-Strawberry this church is not very well known, there were some decorative masterpieces, you don't want to Miss

  • This Catholic Basilica, also known as Real Basilica and Convent of the Holy Heart of Jesus, impressed by the grandeur and beauty. The marble exterior, with countless artistic details, boasts several images of Saints, a majestic dome and two towers. Internally, marble, also displays some paintings and has two major organs. This Basilica was formerly a convent of Carmelite nuns.

  • There are no words to describe the feeling on entering the Basilica. The paintings, ceiling, altar, statues, chapel...everything just draws you in and you are at peace. Mass at 12 noon was an amazing experience. The singer has a beautiful voice and the organs lift your spirits to the heavens (and no, we can't speak Portuguese). Loved our visit!
  • Basílica da Estrela located a top of the hill. From its rooftop opens an amazing view of the city. At the bottom of the basilica spreads the nice garden.
  • Great church and I can recommend going up on the roof for just €4,- to have a nice view of the city. However, I can not recommend that for people who are afraid of heights since it's quite high and there are some minor safety cocerns up there.
  • Beautifully constructed church with attention to details and fine carvings.👌 Stopped by this area in the evening after a long days work and it was a pleasant view all along. The whole place is dotted with historic monuments and museums. Worth a visit as it will take a whole day to cover all the place. Well preserved and well maintained surroundings with artistic landscaping. Grateful to my friend Antonio to have shown me these magnificient monuments!👍
  • Stunning church, so tranquil and peaceful. Filled with so much history and for under £5 you can climb up to the top of the Basilica (150+ steps) for the avid climber. Light candles, say a prayer and take in all that is beautifully symbolically catholic. Great place to reflect and take it all in!! Across from the Estrela is the Jardim Da Estrela park great for a stop off with the children with a swing park to the rear (children only toilets st the back) additional toilets at the front of the park upon entry to the right. Park has two cafes/food stops with beer happy hour as well as Gelado Ice Cream vans opposite the Bascilica. Lisbon Trams journey past constantly so a great trip you could see with the hop on hop off tour.
