St. Mary's Basilica, Krakow

4.7
Featuring two prominent towers, the red brick St. Mary's Basilica dominates the main square of the city's Old Town. Built in the early 13th century, the church features the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world, carved by German sculptor Veit Stoss. The masterpiece was claimed by the Nazis and moved to Germany during World War II. Recovered and restored after the war, it now sits behind the church's high altar. Admire the bottom of the central panel, which depicts the death of Jesus' mother. On the hour, you can hear the trumpet signal play from the top of the taller tower. • There are monuments that leave us speechless. It is difficult to express the feeling once inside the basilica. A feeling of dizziness in the face of gigantism. Colors exploding, a kind of fireworks display. To see absolutely even if you are not a believer, just for the beautiful.

  • Just unbelievable! It's design and beauty is eye soothing! Each an every part of the church is full of history & details. The weather was warm outside, the moment I entered the church, it looked like a completely different weather, so calm & cool. I just closed the eyes for few minutes, it felt so divine that one can not deny the presence of a positive energy. I say it's a must visit in Krakow & do spend an hour or so, inside the church, as it feels amazing!
  • An extremely good visit even though paid tickets required if not there for personal worship. Work being done on the Altar but did not detract from the atmosphere within. The stain glass windows are stunning and the interior decor and architecture is something to behold.
