If you go to Wellington, you must spend a few hours at Te Papa. They currently have a stunning exhibition on Gallipoli which they've mounted in collaboration with the Weta Workshop. Very moving and lo... more »
For the great price of free, you couldn't beat it. If you wanted to see the paid exhibits, I don't think it was terribly expensive. We didn't get that far. The exterior of the building was very appealing. We walked up and saw the different globes, 4 of them. As we walked in, we picked up a map, not really necessary and its awkward how large they are. Smaller would work, maybe one that tri folds. We moved up the escalator to the second floor. We enjoyed ourselves. It was amazing to see the life that used to be and some that still inhabit New Zealand. Sad to see the extinction of populations. The war exhibit was fascinating. The details that went in to creating the large figures was so time intensive. The pores in the skin, the added hair to the limbs and face. The details are what made the figures come to life. Anybody can mold clay into the shape of a stick figure, but what was created here was really talent and time. I'm glad they didn't remove this exhibit and that it is still a main attraction at the museum. I wish we would have put more time on our meter, but we didn't and had to leave before checking out the other floors. Every part of the exhibit was in Maori and English.
I only paid for 1 hour parking so didn't have enough time to get round the whole museum. Probably managed about half of it at a rush but it was so interesting. The war exhibit was awesome and the models were so life like and huge! I would definitely suggest investing a lot more time than I did to get the full experience.
