Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Waimangu

The result of a volcanic eruption from 1886, Waimangu Volcanic Valley represents the world's youngest geothermal system. The area features several lakes, including Frying Pan Lake--considered the world's largest hot spring, as well as a geyser, craters, and springs. In addition to hiking and bird-watching, you can also take a boat trip on one of the lakes to see the former site of the largest silica sinter deposits in the world, known as the Pink and White Terraces. • This is a must see! The park is beautifully maintained, staff are very good, and services offered are great. I highly recommend doing the boat tour at the end. Very informative and utterly stunning. Make this place a priority visit!
  • Easy enough walk up to the Inferno crater. Bus service back makes it even better. Gorgeous natural scenes with a well maintained gravel path to walk on. Some steep steps may make it difficult for elderly visitors.
