Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Bay of Plenty Region / Rotorua District / Rotorua / Te Puia
Take a guided tour of the thermal geysers at Te Puia, Rotorua's undisputed star attraction. A short ride south of the city center, this thermal reserve features over 500 hot springs. The most famous of the many geysers is the aptly named Big Splash, erupting at least two dozen times a day and spouting water as high as 30 m (98 ft) into the air. Other highlights include regular cultural performances and popular hangi feasts, allowing visitors to experience the local cuisine. Don't miss the carving and weaving schools, where you can learn about the traditional methods of Maori artisans. My family enjoyed our day at Te Puia very much! We learnt a great deal from the guided tour (she was lovely and informative). It was easy to navigate our way around the park and we LOVED the concert of traditional dance and song! Their customer service is also FANTASTIC! We had accidentally left our camera behind, but they very kindly posted it back home to us in AUSTRALIA! How wonderful is that!!! We were so appreciative, as our family holiday photos were all on that camera! Thank you for a great experience!
It is very interesting to learn something about the Maori culture. The Park is very nice and you have a good combination of culture, nature and craftsmanship there. I would recommend taking a tour through the village to get some additional information and also some insights to the Maori behavior.
